A museum that keeps up with the times, the Kunsthalle Basel ushers in the latest era of art by bringing you works from the generation of now, and has been doing so long enough to make it Switzerland’s oldest institution for contemporary art. Refusing to stick to the tried and tested, the Kunsthalle Basel is famously (perhaps infamously to some) known to put on display original and somewhat risque artwork that gets our minds thinking and is not afraid to confront the issues of today. To give context to the unique artwork, the Kunsthall plays host to a dynamic range of talks, performances, film screenings, all displayed in their airy hall with an illuminating skylight. The Kunsthalle has played a part in promoting up and coming artists at their time of the likes of Edvard Munch, Vincent Van Gogh and Jackson Pollock.

Within the Kunsthalle lies the Swiss Architecture Museum, which bridges the gap between professionals in the field and the wider public by presenting the best of architecture in a way that is accessible to all. It also houses the celebrated Restaurant Kunsthalle, with its signature ceiling lights hanging from the ceiling which have to be seen to be imagined, serving up delicious food in a cosy and inviting setting. Finally, the Stadtkino Basel is one of the most significant art-house cinemas in Switzerland, an accurate representation of Basel’s vibrant and unique film culture.
