Kunst Haus Wien – Museum Hundertwasser

A celebration of one of Austria’s greatest artists.

If you’ve been to Vienna (or Instagram), then you’ve seen the delightful and fascinating Hundertwasserhaus, a colourful mix of houses, that at first glance, confound many because of the uneven lines that snake the building’s façade, crossing colourful blocks among foliage that seems to have become a part of the building. The Kunst Haus Wien is a museum dedicated to works by the architect behind the Hundertwasserhaus, Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Founded by Hundertwasser himself, the museum sits close to the iconic housing complex and reflects his creative principles.

From its very façade, the building sets itself apart from the rest, with its unusual colours and blatant disregard of the distinct monotony that is characteristic of most modern buildings. As you step inside, Hundertwasser’s iconic style of floors that resemble waves, and irregular lines are visible. The bright, unusual colours, along with the unevenly winding staircase, will take you to the main section of the exhibition. Among all this, you will find greenery wound around various parts, a reflection of Hundertwasser’s belief in the coexistence of man and nature. The building is as much art as the exhibitions it hosts, which includes the world’s only permanent exhibition of Hundertwasser’s works, among temporary exhibitions of other artists that are hosted here. Discover Hundertwasser the man, as an artist and architect as you admire tapestries and paintings, and gain a better understanding of an iconic Austrian figure.
