Kunming Golden Temple

A relic from the past, a treasure of the present.

The Kunming Golden Temple was built during the Ming Dynasty and then moved to the foot of the Jizu Mountains. However, it was destroyed a few decades later, prompting the temple to be rebuilt at its original site on the Mingfeng Mountains, in 1671. With bronze weighing over 200 tons, the temple walls and structure itself feature smelting and casting techniques that were used centuries ago in Yunnan. In fact, it is the largest copper temple in all of China!

Climb the side of the mountains to pass the intricately decorated Heavenly Gates, forming a peaceful harmony with the surrounding flora. As you feast your eyes on the tarnished copper, its golden glow reveals the reason behind the temple’s naming. Of the many fascinating artefacts you will see in the temple, one is a double-edged sword, said to belong to a Taoist deity that weighs over a 20 kilograms! Make your way to the Bell Tower with an immense copper bell, over half a century old. If you have a few kuai to spare, why not ring the bell? Not only do you get a close-up of the bell, but you also get to enjoy the delightful view of the surrounding scenery. Enjoy a few sweet treats and pose with an occasional camel before heading to the greenhouse. Here, you can find verdant greenery and beautiful sculptures. Don’t pass up on a chance to visit this beautiful temple while in Kunming!
