Kuamoo Point (Maihi Bay)

This place is brimming with history.

If you want to find out more about the history and culture of the native Hawaiians, this is the place to visit. Although Kuamo’o Point itself is only elevated by 2 metres, it’s still an imposing bit of rock constantly battered by the spray of crashing waves. It’s made all the more significant for its close proximity to the Kuamo’o Burials, an ancient Hawaiian burial site also known as the Lekeleke Burial Grounds. It was created for the warriors killed in combat during the major battle of 1819, a significant turning point in the history of Hawaii. At that time, the traditional kapu system of religious governance had been abolished by the then-government. Traditionalist forces who wanted to preserve the kapu system faced off with the royal army in the place known as Lekeleke. The royal army eventually won the skirmish thanks to the advantage of a small cannon mounted on a double canoe, which took out over 300 warriors on the opposing side. Religion was abolished, and after the first Christian missionaries arrived on the island, the culture of Hawaii was changed irrevocably. So take a trip down here to see where it all began.
