Kronborg Castle

Popularly known as ‘Elsinore’, the setting of William Shakespeare’s famous play Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, see the magnificent Kronborg Castle.

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2000, the Kronborg Castle is located in the town of Helsingør, Denmark. Touted as one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe, King Frederick II had the medieval fortress drastically transformed from 1574 to 1585. See the splendid chamber of the king and look out for the ceiling painting of Putti carrying Christian IV’s crowned monogram.


Admire the furniture from 17th century Netherlands and make sure that you do not miss the Ballroom. With a dimension of 62 x 12 metres, it was the biggest hall in Northern Europe when it was completed in 1582. See some rare paintings such as Feminine Pursuits by Reinhold Timm and A Wedding in a Church by Francis Cleyn. The highlight of Kronborg Castle would have to be the seven highly prized tapestries found in the Little Hall, from the original series of forty tapestries portraying one hundred Danish kings. This castle is not only rich in history, but rich in tasteful décor too.

Tips Before You Go
In commemoration of Shakespeare’s famous play, there is a special immersive tour available here known as Hamlet Live, which will put you into the shoes of the titular character as you explore the entirety of the castle. Due to the castle’s large size, you won’t feel too claustrophobic even if the crowds are huge. Just take note that this is a popular destination for school excursions on weekdays.
