Kristiansand Cathedral

The spectacular Kristiansand Cathedral is one the largest churches in Norway and is hard to miss.

Located in the city of Kristiansand in southern Norway, the Kristiansand Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in the country. With its steeple standing at a staggering height of 70 metres and the entire structure covering a width of approximately 40 metres, it is no wonder why. Designed by architecture Henrik Thrap Meyer, the neo-Gothic church was completed in 1885 with an original capacity of around 2,000 seated guests along with 1,200 standees. However, the seating has now been reduced so as to allow to church the comfortably accommodate its guests.

Interestingly, the church also acts as the seat of the Bishop of Agder, and the Telemark in the Church of Norway, signifying its important stead with regard to religious institutions. Of course, this cathedral is in the same place as 2 other cathedrals that were destroyed due to fires. The current cathedral also has its own share of history as well, with its tower having been damaged by a grenade during World War II.

Indeed, if you make a visit to Kristiansand, the Kristiansand Cathedral’s white and turquoise-green brick structure stands out majestically from its surroundings and its significance as a religious institute definitely makes it worth the visit for any tourist.
