A beautiful mosque standing tall in Marrakesh, Morocco.
The Koutoubia Mosque, goes by many other names such as Jami’al-Kutubiyah and the Mosque of the Booksellers. It is situated in the southwest Medina quarter of Marrakesh city in Morocco. Decorated with curved windows, ceramic inlays, pointed merlons and beautiful arches, the architecture behind this mosque is bound to take your breath away. Made predominantly of brick and sandstone, the mosque is an architectural feat, especially considering that it was built in the 12th century!
If you think that the mosque is beautiful in the day, wait till you see it at night when it is floodlit. Its stunning minaret, which stands at a staggering 77 metres in height, includes a spire and orbs, and is perhaps the most highly regarded structure in whole complex, having been the inspiration for several other pieces of architecture like the Gerald of Seville and the Hassan Tower of Rabat. There are six rooms in the interior and wrapping around them is a ramp which can be used by the muezzin to reach the upper balcony. The prayer hall is built in a T-shaped fashion and is large. When you come to visit, soak in the atmosphere and be sure to check out what this spectacular mosque has to offer!
