Korenbeurs

Visit this building that once served as the city’s grain exchange.

The Korenbeurs in Groningen is a neo-classical building, situated in the heart of the city, right in front of the Der Aa-Kerk. Although it is now a supermarket, it used to be the location of grain trade. As you approach the building, the Roman gods who catch your attention on the façade of the building are intrinsically linked to the Korenbeurs’ original function. Mercury, the God of Trade, sits atop the pediment of the building, while Neptune, God of the Sea and Ceres, Goddess of Fertility and Agriculture stand in the niches. The high windows of the building allowed plenty of light in, enabling the process of checking the grain easier in the past. Since 1971, the building is a “rijksmonument” or, National Heritage Site, as well as one of the Top 100 Dutch heritage sites that were selected in 1990. Be sure to visit the Korenbeurs, an important part of Groningen’s rich history.
