Knights’ Square

An abundance of historical value consolidated in one square.

One of the main squares in Pisa, the Knights’ Square, or Piazza dei Cavalieri, holds great value for the city. While it now serves as the main building for the Scuola Normale di Pisa, a tertiary learning institute founded by Napoleon Bonaparte, this place has had differing purposes over the centuries.

Notably, in the 16th century, it served as the headquarters for the Order of the Knights of St Stephan, the church having been designed by the architect of none other than Cosimo I de' Medici, the first Grand Duke of Tuscany. Prior to that, the square served as a spot for political issues for the people of Pisa. Set foot on a land that has had great historical value over the years by visiting Pisa’s Knights’ Square.
