Klosteroy – Utstein Abbey

A modest and tranquil medieval monastery located on the shore of the island of Klosterøy.

Once upon a time, Utsein Abbey was a garrison for the first Viking king, before becoming a monastery for the monks of Stavanger, and finally being converted into a private mansion. Today, it is a quiet, unassuming attraction that holds the distinction of being Norway’s only medieval monastery. But beneath its pristine white exterior and stately décor, this rural abbey has a creepy side. Legends tell of a female ghost that has haunted the monastery for centuries after her husband’s betrayal. As you explore the abbey’s refractory and dormitory, perhaps you may find yourself coming face to face with this vengeful ghost. While largely known as a historical site, the abbey also plays host to frequent concerts – ranging from folk tunes to grand orchestral music – as well as seminars, and conventions. Utstein Abbey also offers one of the most interesting guided tours – a singing guide takes you through the history of the abbey and performs medieval songs. Utstein Abbey’s new spin on guided historic tours is sure to leave you wanting more.

Tips Before You Go
The abbey is only open on Sundays from March to May, and on Mondays to Saturdays from May to August. If you visit during other parts of the year, you’ll only be able to see its exterior, and while beautiful, it is the interior that will truly wow you.
