Widely known as one of the filming locations for the immensely popular TV series 'Game of Thrones', Klis Fortress is known to be the fictional city of Meeren. In reality, this fortress is located at the centre of the hillside village of Klis, which is within the mountainous regions of Mosor and Kozjak. Steeped in history, the village of Klis was a significant medieval fortress that has been around for over 2,000 years and is deemed to be an important site for the village of Klis.


One could admire the grand fortifications that has miraculously survived the ages, as well as head to the small museum that details aspects of the castle’s past. There is also a former Austrian armory converted into a museum of sorts, holding a vast array of arms, armor and old costumes. Neverthless, the magnificent view alone will make the trip there worthwhile, for it offers panoramic views of Split, as well as the cerulean Adriatic sea. During winter, visitors can even experience the gorgeous sunset from the fortress itself.

Tips Before You Go
This old fortress is free to explore, and visitors can wander around without much restriction. However, it is unequipped with ropes or barriers, so do practise extra caution when walking along the edges.
