Agios Nikolaos, Greece
Kitroplateia Beach

Sand against skin, a cool breeze through your hair, you gaze at the distant peaks of the Sitia Mountain Range lounging at the famous Kitroplateia Beach.

A pebble’s (don’t mind the pun) throw away from the town of Agios Nikolaos is the Kitroplateia Beach. Its shimmering water front invites visitors to soak their tired feet in the cool waters while umbrellas can easily be rented by the seaside for a slow tan through the afternoon. The convenient beachfront is well connected, bordered by the magnificent Mirabello Bay and backed by the infamous Lake Voulismeni. An extended strip of rock curves into the waters, allowing visitors to lounge by the edge with the taste of salt on their lips and the mist of crashing waves against their skin. The true bonus to this beach has to be the town’s edge upon which it lies. By night, its shores are awash with the sounds of clinking glasses and hearty laughter from the open doors of taverns and restaurants lining the beach. After a day of sightseeing past quaint shop fronts and curious alleys, the beach is always within reach for a short stroll to blow away all the weariness of the day.

Tips Before You Go
A short distance away from the left end of the beach, you might be able to see a metal sculpture spearing the sky in the colors of steel and bronze overexposed to salt. That would be the Horn of Amalthea, more famously known as the Horn of Plenty or the Cornucopia, shaped by the Sotiriadi brothers. The brothers who are native to Crete have added many more installations to the Agios Nikolaos lakeside, adding a dash of contemporary art to the traditional townscape.
