Straight out of dream. That’s what this mountain is and it is no wonder that it is Iceland’s most photographed spot.
On the west coast of Iceland is a town called Grundarfjordur, which famous for its surreal landscape and of course – you guessed it – Kirkjufell Mountain. Located in the Snaefellsnes peninsula, it is the most photographed mountain in the country for very obvious reasons. It is truly a remarkable experience to see this mountain protrude out of the ground for some 463 metres above sea level amongst the backdrop of calm beaches, especially when the weather is good. If you’re into sunsets, we advise you to visit this place between the beginning of July and the end of August as that’s when you’ll get to see the sun dip into the ocean over the horizon. If you travel to Iceland between May to mid-August, you’ll most likely even witness the phenomenon known as the Midnight Sun! The hike up this mountain takes around an hour and a half but once you reach the peak, the spectacular scenery will make up for all your exhaustion. No matter which direction you turn to, you will only see a picturesque landscape. Just try to imagine standing here on a dark winter night as the Northern Lights flash across the sky!
