Kilden Performing Arts Center

A monumental building of the arts with a peculiar architectural stead.

Kilden Performing Arts Centre is the cultural heart of Norway. Situated strategically at the Kristiansand Harbour, the centre dazzles especially at night when the lights are on and the golden wooden cantilevers are in the full glory. Together, their reflection on the Skagerrak Strait is breathtaking.

The building’s architecture is truly unique and embodies its role as the city’s creative centre. Met with great enthusiasm and recognition, this abstract wonder’s wooden wall, made of local oak no doubt, not only serves to cement the centre’s status as an art hub but also pays tribute to the harbour’s history of being an oak export industry. The highlight of the building’s façade is the wooden cantilevers that extend diagonally way past the walls, creating a surreal effect on the structure.

With the opening of the Kilden Performing Arts Centre, all of Sørlandet’s performing arts institutions have been brought to a common space. Its concert hall is so huge that 1,180 patrons can sit in it at a time, even though this figure goes higher for rhythmic concerts. When you’re in Kristiansand, do NOT miss this place.
