Khe Sanh Combat Base

A former United States Marine Corps outpost during the Vietnam War.

The Khe Sanh Combat Base was a former United States Marine Corps outpost that is situated south of the Vietnamese Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) that was used during the highly controversial Vietnam War.

Fighting began there in 1967 with hill fights, later expanding into the Battle of Khe Sanh. In 1968, the base was abandoned and the US army sited vulnerabilities, allowing the 3rd Marine Division to conduct mobile missions along the DMZ. In 1971, the base was reactivated to support Operation Lam Son 719. The combat base can be visited daily now by tourists beginning in Hue. Most of the base is now overgrown by vegetation and on the base sits a small museum with historical pictures and weapons on display. There are also interesting abandoned helicopters, bunkers and some parts of the remaining airstrip that visitors can have a look at.

A visit to the Khe Sanh Combat Base truly leaves one perplexed over who the real enemy is in this drawn-out war when you see the repercussions it had on the American soldiers and not just your background knowledge of the lasting effects of the war on the Vietnamese.
