One of Egypt’s most famous marketplaces!
The Khan el-Khalili is a significant souk or marketplace in the historic district of Cairo in Egypt. The bazaar district is one of the city’s major attractions for both tourists and locals alike. The site was once occupied by a mausoleum known as the “turbat az-za’faraan” or Saffron Tomb, which was where the Fatimid caliphs were buried. The district in recent history soon became associated with Turkish traders and during the Ottoman period, the Turkish community of Cairo populated this area. Today, it is occupied by local Egyptian vendors and locals rather than foreign merchants and store holders, but it is significantly aimed at attracting the tourist crowd. Walking through the souk, you will be treated to a tantalising mix of aromatic smells and interesting sights as vendors shout their prices. While it may seem as if the souvenirs and traditional handicrafts here are overpriced, it is all up to the buyer to tap onto their bargaining skills to get them for cheaper. If you’re starting to feel hungry, then just follow the smell of sizzling meats and fresh coffee, because there are just tons of eateries and food stalls over here. One of the oldest and most renowned is Fishawi’s, which was established all the way back in 1773! You can enjoy a freshly-brewed cup of coffee here and just relax with friends. Just bear in mind that the scent of shisha smoke will be everywhere though. If you don’t fancy that, then why not enjoy some falafels or kebabs in the open air market instead. The Khan el-Khalili is definitely a must-visit if you wish to purchase souvenirs and experience a local authentic nights out!
