Keri Caves

Be ready to be transported to the realm of Poseidon as you pass through the bone white limestone gates of the Keri Caves.

On the famous Greek island of Zante, along the south western promontory of Marathia Cape, lie the hollow caverns of Keri Caves. Your journey would begin from one of the many boat points leading to the caves from the towns Laganas, Agios Sostis, Limni Keriou or Keri. From there you would be brought through majestic limestone arches, carved by time and the sea, leaping above you from the ocean. As you near the cave, you can choose to take a dip into the clear waters sparkling in the sunlight but don’t be fooled as the waters are in fact up to 20m deep. It would be good to have your snorkeling gear handy as diving agencies on the main island do offer trips to the caves for guided diving trips.

If you do get the chance to swim close to the twin peaks of the Mizythras do look out for a narrow passageway on one of the rock outcroppings. It’s said that the narrow strip of sand bordering the crevasse is home to numerous starfish. The Keri Caves are truly a gateway to the hidden treasures of the ocean.

Tips Before You Go
Turtle spotting trips by certified agencies often bring visitors to the waters surrounding Keri Caves which abound with the protected species of Loggerhead turtles endemic to the Mediterranean. Those interested should however remember to book a guide ahead of time, particularly in June when sightings are most frequent. A sighting isn’t assured however but if you do spot the shy reptiles, the experience is quite remarkable.
