Katavothres

Bring your curiosity along to the site of Katavothres and try to crack the age-old mystery of disappearing seawater.

The Katavothres, which literally means “sink”, is a popular tourist spot in the Ionian Islands of Kefalonia. Every year, visitors from all over the world flock to this place en masse to witness an unusual, intriguing geological phenomenon. Let us tell you what exactly happens here. When sea water gushes into the area through cracks in the rocks at the shore, it disappears without a trace. That’s right, it DISAPPEARS! It was later found by a group of scientists that the water empties into underground sinkholes and fuses with rainwater before flowing into the Melissani Lake in Sami. Then, finally, it flows into the sea at the Karavomilos Village, with this occurring above sea level. This entire process takes two weeks! The scientists discovered this by injecting purple dyes into the water. Pretty mind-boggling, isn’t it?
