Morocco’s contemporary capital city, Rabat, with all its modernity and rapid development, has a birthplace of a long past – and it is the Kasbah of the Udayas.
History has it that this is where Rabat began back in the 12th century – at the Kasbah of the Udayas. Initially built to defend the city from external attacks, the fortified walls are still in place today and the quaint town on the inside is still inhabited. As you walk along the fortifications, you will be able to get a great view of the town, no doubt something that all the soldiers back then used as motivation to fight hard and protect their loved ones. If you visit during the evening, you will be treated to the absolutely mesmerising view of the sunset. What’s interesting is that the kasbah has been renovated by different people during different times in the past. This has resulted in the various parts looking a little disjointed, but nevertheless, they all possess their own unique beauty, and when put together, the results are astounding. Today, this town is no less exciting. Windy paths lined with whitewashed and blue houses, hipster cafés and shops as well art exhibitions all make the Kasbah of the Udayas a truly special place to visit.
