Karl Johans Gate

Possibly the most popular area in Oslo.

If you have been to Oslo and have not passed by Karl Johans Gate, then you can’t really say that you have been to Oslo. Named after King Charles III John, Karl Johans Gate is in fact a misnomer. Unlike what its name implies, it is actually a street, strangely enough. It is considered one of the main streets in the city due to its proximity to popular attractions, and you are sure to pass by it during your time in Oslo. Heck, you’re sure to walk through it. The street is about 1km long, and includes must-visit spots such as the Central Station, Stortinget, National Theatre, and Royal Palace. If you happen to visit during winter, don’t forget to stop by the Spikersuppa, or the palace pond, which transforms into a skating rink when it freezes over. With so many wonderful landmarks to explore and within walking distance, you shouldn’t miss out on this delightful street.

Tips Before You Go
The street is extra special during Christmas time, as there is usually a Christmas market held here every year. However, this also makes it the busiest period, especially with all the locals and tourists shopping here. There also numerous cafés over here, so if you’re feeling peckish, drop by one of them for a bite and a nice steaming cup of coffee.
