Karaiskakis Stadium

The home ground of Greek Club Olympiacos FC!

The Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, which was officially opened in 1896 and sits nearly over 32,000 spectators, is situated in Piraeus, Greece. Formerly called the Neo Phaliron Velodrome, today, it remains as the home ground of the Greek football club Olympiacos FC. The stadium was named after a military commander during the Greek War of Independence who was fatally wounded in the vicinity.

Used during the 1896 Summer Olympics, the stadium underwent refurbishment works during the 1960s and was again, completely reconstructed in 2004 to fit the current seating capacity. It then hosted the football tournaments of the 2004 Summer Olympics. Unfortunately, twenty-one supporters had lost their lives in 1981 during the Karaiskaki Stadium disaster and today, where Gate 7 is located, twenty-one seats are coloured black instead of red forming the number “7” to remember those that passed away that day.
