You don’t need to go to a museum to appreciate fine art.
Most people immediately associate Hawaii with beaches, sun, luaus, hula dances and not much else. But Hawaii actually has much to offer in the arts and culture scene, as perfectly encapsulated in this urban collective “Pow! Wow!” Indeed, this exhibit, which is spread out across several streets and neighbourhoods, packs a mean punch with its incredibly creative and quirky combination of workshops, film screenings, concerts and gallery shows. But the main star of the show is the one that is completely free of charge, unconfined and does not have to conform to anything; humongous murals borne of the wild imaginations of talented artists from around the world, including Emmy winning artist Kevin Lyons who has worked with the likes of Nike, Converse and Coca-cola.
This part of the city was slowly straggling behind in popularity, but it was brought back to life by this art initiative. The “face of Kakkao”, a giant image of a woman’s face is depicted on one street, while on the main area, Lana Lane, a skeleton holding a surfboard is giving the shaka, a Hawaiian hand-greeting. Some other examples of the bizarre Hawaiian inspired art you’ll find here is a banana dancing the hula and a Narwhal sitting at the fireside with some campers. The murals are constantly evolving and updating, so you could wander the streets over and over again and still never be short of new pictures to snap.
