Kaichi School Museum (旧開智学校)

Although Kaichi School is no longer a school, it is still educating many.

Home to what was one of Japan’s oldest schools, the Kaichi School building currently functions as a museum. Opened in 1873 in a temporary venue, but transferred to its permanent abode in 1876, the two-storey building was bestowed the honour of an Important Cultural Property in 1961, and subsequently transformed into an educational museum in 1965. Built in the Giyofu architectural style, the building has masterfully combined both Japanese and Western stylings. Visitors will observe that the Asian influences of an octagonal tower and dragon carvings are complemented by Western influences of white plaster walls, foreign-made glass and decorated pillars. Head down to the Kaichi School Museum and learn about Japanese educational practices and materials from the days of old.
