Jugendstilsenteret

An Art Nouveau museum with impressive architecture; you could consider it an artwork in itself.

An intriguing mix of art and history resides within the unpronounceable Jugendstilsenteret, a museum that is said to be the throbbing heart of the quaint town of Ålesund. Whilst Jugendstilsenteret is a gallery dedicated to Art Nouveau pieces, which is an international art style that transcends beyond the narrow scope of paintings and sculptures to encompass even architecture and jewellery, it also serves to preserve the town’s heritage. After Ålesund was decimated in a fire, the town was rebuilt in an Art Nouveau architectural style – the entire process of which was documented in a multimedia retelling in the museum. As a former pharmacy, the museum also houses the original interior from its days as a pharmacy alongside its Art Nouveau exhibits. True to its tongue twister of a name, Jugendstilsenteret will be a wild ride from start to end.

Tips Before You Go
The museum itself is not particularly large, but the exhibits here are an eclectic collection, so you will definitely find something that will tickle your fancies. If you plan on watching the multimedia presentation about the fire and rebuilding efforts, it is recommended that you do so with a group of people that you actually know. Visitors are required to select a language at the start of the presentation, and if you were to join a large group of strangers, they may not choose a language that you understand.
