Jostedalsbreen National Park

Jostedalsbreen National Park is where you will find many seasons in one place.

The Jostedalsbreen National Park, if anything, lives up to its title as a national park. With its a diverse array of natural environments, including lush greenery, waterfalls, cold areas of glaciers and plain mountains situated a short distance from each other, it is no wonder that many people ponder whether the National Park experiences more than one season at any one point of time.

The National Park covers a whopping 1,310 square kilometres, of which the iconic Jostedalsbreen glacier, mainland Europe’s largest glacier, covers 487 square kilometres. To put that into perspective, the glacier is equivalent to 300,000 million bathtubs of water or the amount of water Norway is expected to consume as a nation for the next century.

Of course, your trip to the National Park would not be complete without visiting the visitor’s centre, which showcases the natural and cultural history of the local area. Should your visit to the National Park be rushed, the visitor centre offers a detailed sneak-peek of what the park has to offer, including a botanical garden featuring the flora and fauna found in the park, a geological garden and a scenic view of the mountains. Of course, should you be seeking a meal with a view, head on down the centre’s dining room, which offers an unparalleled view of the Stryn lake surrounded by the mesmerizing mountains in the landscape.
