Jordan Archaeological Museum

Experience the story of the Kingdom’s past through the Jordan Archaeological Museum.

The Jordan Archaeological Museum was established in 1951 on the Citadel Hill in Amman to be a cultural center and national museum. It displays an array of artefacts excavated from different archaeological sites in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan from different eras, dating as far back from the Paleolithic to the Islamic period.

The galleries are displayed in chronological order, with representations of ancient items in daily life such as glass, jewelry and pottery, as well as monumental artefacts such as inscriptions and statuaries. The highlights and must-see exhibits in the museum include the Dead Sea scrolls discovered in caves; Neolithic preserved skulls from Jericho; statues from Ain Ghazel which are some of the oldest known to men; the Bella ivory box, and many more. This impressive collection of items encapsulates a cache of history in the heart of The Citadel. Whether you’re a history buff or a traveler seeking cultural knowledge, the informative exhibits along with the engaging presentation in the museum makes this a place not to be missed.
