The Joods Historisch Museum, or Jewish Historical Museum, is housed in two of the grandest buildings in the Netherlands’s Jewish Quarter: the Great Synagogue and the New Synagogue. The museum’s extensive collection throws light on the lifestyle, culture and heritage of the Jews throughout history.

You’ll get to see how Jews first arrived in Amsterdam in the 1600s, how they were treated and how they managed to eke out a living for the next few centuries. There’s also a section dedicated to their lives in the 20th century to present day, facing two wars and, most notably, the Nazi occupation.

With artefacts like paintings, sculptures and everyday objects on display, you’ll get an intimate look into the lives of a people who have been always been severely misunderstood.
