Jogyesa Temple (조계사)

A temple that symbolizes Korean spirit.

Constructed in the 14th century, the Jogyesa Temple is an important Buddhist temple in Seoul. Serving as the head temple of the Jogye order in Korean Buddhism, the temple you see today is a 20th century reconstruction of the original, which was tragically burnt down in a fire. During the Japanese Occupation, the temple was actually named Taegosa, but was renamed to Jogyesa during the Buddhist Purification Movement in 1954, as a way to distance Korean Buddhism from Japanese influence.

In line with true Buddhist principles, this temple oozes an atmosphere of peace and calm, a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of the busy city. See this colourful main Dharma hall and its accompanying Buddhist statues for yourself by visiting Seoul’s Jogyesa Temple.
