Jianshui Confucius Temple

A homage to the greatest Chinese philosopher of all time.

As the second largest Confucian temple in China, the Jianshui Confucius Temple is a brilliant architectural work of wonder dedicated to the great Chinese teacher and philosopher – Confucius. Built in 1285, the temple remains as an emblem of traditional architectural art and history, and is recognised as a national key cultural relic protection unit in China.

The grand and stately palatial building complex is ornately decorated with beautifully engraved sculptures and relics, and is framed by multi-tiered tiled roofs that contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the temple. The symmetrical structure and magnificent outlay of the temple gain inspiration from the Qufu Confucius Temple in Shandong, and create an ambience of solemnity and serenity for the visiting tourist or religious devotee. Highlights of the Jianshui Confucius Temple include the Pan Chi Pool (or Xuehai), a clear, green pool around which learned scholars used to gather to study, and the Ancestral Master Hall, which serves as the main hall of worship to Confucius and site of regular sacrificial rituals for Confucian devotees.
