Jewish Museum

A moving memorial.

Comprising six historical Jewish monuments clustered together in Prague’s pre-war Jewish nucleus (Josefov), the Jewish Museum now stands as a solemn memorial to its people, and a sobering reminder of the senselessness of war. Providing visitors with a crystallised form of Jewish heritage, the Jewish Museum consists of: the Maisel Synagogue; the Pinkas Synagogue; the Spanish Synagogue; the Klaus Synagogue; the Ceremonial Hall; and the Old Jewish Cemetery, and is perfect for history buffs, culture vultures, and museum lovers alike.

Originally created by the Nazis as an ironically grotesque demonstration of supremacy – to create a ‘museum of an extinct race’, the Jewish Museum is home to one of the largest collections of sacred Jewish artefacts in the world, as well as a deeply comprehensive archive on seven centuries of injustice and oppression. Starting from the striking Pinkas Synagogue, visitors gain poignant and moving insight into the atrocities of WWII; the building is a homage to the 77,297 Czech victims of the Nazis. The building also contains the entrance to Europe’s oldest surviving Jewish graveyard – the Old Jewish Cemetery, a solemn place of deep contemplation and mourning, home to an estimated 100,000 graves of the local Jewish community. The Klaus Synagogue and Ceremonial Hall offer visitors captivating exhibitions on Jewish traditions and customs, such as bar mitzvahs and circumcision, whilst the Maisel Synagogue displays a collection of paraphernalia pertaining to the history of the Bohemian and Moravian Jewish community. The Spanish Synagogue displays gorgeous Moorish architecture, and concludes the moving tale of the Jews in Czech Republic, from emancipation to the modern contemporary world.
