Iziko translates to hearth, where families would traditionally gather to chat, tell stories, and pass down the heritage of their culture. The South African Museum is the natural history museum member of the Iziki Museum group, and when we say it covers the history of South Africa, we mean it; with more than one and a half million specimens ranging from 700 million year old fossils and 120000 year old stone tools to preserved insects and fish that were captured just the previous week and t-shirts that were printed yesterday.

Marvel at the ocean giants in the World of Water Exhibit, and for even huger underwater creatures, the whale well houses a 20.5 metre long blue whale skeleton. Land animals, birds and of course, us humans, are all well represented through dioramas, fossils, artifacts and much, much more! The Planetarium offers incredible displays that perfectly encapsulate the wonders of our universe, and the discovery room offers hands on experience where you can get up close and personal with real specimens. Whatever you do, rest assured that you’ll leave feeling stimulated, inspired, mind-blown and a much more knowledgeable person.
