Iwatayama Monkey Park (嵐山モンキーパーク)

Get up close and personal with the snow monkeys amidst the astounding scenery of Mount Arashiyama.

Yes, the snow monkeys! The very ones that we see in iconic photos bathing in the Japanese hot springs in winter. Now you can get the chance to encounter them up close and personal! You can feed them, and maybe even touch them if you are lucky. Native only to Japan, the snow monkeys, also known as the ‘Japanese Macaque’, roam freely at the Iwatayama Monkey Park, in Arashiyama, Kyoto. About 150 of these amazing primates live in this park high up on the picturesque Mt Arashiyama. Great photo opportunities abound, as these playful creatures frolic about and monkey around. The monkeys aren’t the only attraction however. The stunning views of Kyoto and the glittering river that runs through it, also makes the climb uphill well worth it. Just don’t forget to bring some bananas to feed the lovely snow monkeys!

Tips Before You Go
Bring a towel along with you, because the climb uphill will surely leave you sweating profusely once you reach the top. Besides that, always remember to observe all the rules in the park, because the monkeys might get aggressive if you don’t, and that wouldn’t be fun at all.
