Kuala Lumpur City, Malaysia
Istana Negara, Jalan Istana (The Royal Museum)

Once the stately home of Malaysia’s royalty, the palace now offers guests a glance into their lives.

The convenient home of a Japanese Governor during the occupation of Malaya, this former home of a Chinese millionaire is now seeing its fourth incarnation as a museum that offers visitors a chance to peep into the ceremonial affairs of Malaysia’s royalty. The former residence of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, the palace has a dominating position on the hill of Bukit Petaling overlooking the Klang River, giving the palace an air of superiority and regality.

Been the monarch’s private estate, the Istana Negara was closed off to the public for several decades. However, its doors were thrown wide open, shortly after the royal household moved into its bigger, brighter, and newer counterpart just a short distance away, for locals and tourists alike to have a glimpse into the lives of the royal family. Inside, you’ll have the chance to study some of the ceremonial costumes up close, and soak in the grand designs. You’ll also be able to visit some of the rooms in the palace, including the famous throne room, where royal occasions, appointment ceremonies and hosting of foreign diplomats awee held. For more reputable guests such as Heads of States, they were received at the beautiful Dewan Mengadap hall on the first floor. Whatever the occasion, you definitely must not miss the opportunity to regale in this regal setting!
