Ilha Fiscal

Relive the last days of the Brazilian monarchy.

Traveling close to the historic city center of Rio de Janeiro, you’ll notice an island in Guanabara Bay. If you’re rubbing your eyes in disbelief because Ilha Fiscal is home to a castle straight out of a children’s fairytale, then you wouldn’t be the first. Although once known as Ilha dos Ratos (Rat Island), it is clear that the island you see today gives an entirely different impression. The palace here, in all its pastel green glory, is complete with a lovely clock tower and spires topped with finials that rise high into the sky. It’s not hard to imagine that this was the setting for the Baile de Ilha Fiscal, the “Last Ball of the Empire” that the imperial government held. A revolution took place mere days later, which led to the formation of the Republic of Brazil.

Today, part of the palace has become a maritime museum - a treasure trove where culture and history intertwine to give you a unique experience. Tour this neo-Gothic palace, designed by Adolfo del Vecchio and inaugurated in 1889. Admire both its architecture (read: stained glass windows) and exhibits. You can also learn about how the Navy contributed to Brazil’s development over the decades. When you aren’t touring, you can step outside to gaze across the deep blue of Guanabara Bay and the distant mountain peaks. It’s bound to be an unforgettable experience here at Ilha Fiscal!
