Iglesia de Santa María la Blanca

Discover how elements from 3 different religions live harmoniously together, all in a single building.

How many places of religion can claim to be home elements derived from three different religions? Well, Iglesia de Santa María la Blanca can no doubt boast about this achievement! With its origins as a mosque, in the 13th century, it was transformed as a synagogue for the Jews. Lasting till the next century, where anti-Jews revolts forced it to change its identity.

Over time, Iglesia de Santa María la Blanca transformed into a Christian church, settling down since the 17th century till date. Elements of the Baroque architectural style are predominant in the church, with lavish mural paintings spread across the walls, all around the church. Known to preserve remains of the previous 2 religions, elements of the 2 religions before are present in the different layout of the various places of worship and prayer. The mosque was discovered to bear a courtyard and prayer hall, overlapping with the current layout of the church and the Epistle. Elements of the synagogue are also preserved, as seen in the blind arches in the vaults of the central nave, as well as spaces where famous paintings of Murillo used to be! With the gothic elements encased inside this gorgeous building, the Iglesia de Santa María la Blanca is definitely one place you must visit to appreciate its uniqueness.
