One of the oldest and largest synagogues in North Africa, Ibn Danan Synagogue was built in the 17th century, and has established itself as one of Morocco’s religious treasures. Its design is influenced largely by Moroccan and Islamic styles, despite its Jewish origins. The original interior is warm and welcoming, featuring Moroccan-style wall mosaic surrounding a carved wooden cabinet containing original 17th century Torah scrolls.

During the Second World War, the synagogue was closed and fell into a miserable state of disrepair. Thankfully, it was restored in the 1990s with the help of members from the Fes community who recognised its importance as a priceless cultural monument and tribute to the strong Jewish community.

Located in the heart of the Medina, the Ibn Danan Synagogue is a standing testament to the revolutionary, diverse cultural forces which have shaped Morocco since ages ago.

Tips Before You Go
Though open to public, this quiet synagogue rarely flings its doors wide open. Be on the lookout for its entrance and be prepared to look for its caretaker to let you in. Once inside, prepare yourself as you snap away relentlessly!
