Hyōgo Prefectural Museum of Art (兵庫県立美術館)

A highly regarded museum which is the largest in Western Japan.

Following the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995, the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art was constructed on Kobe’s waterfront as part of the city’s revitalisation efforts. Designed by the renowned architect Ando Tadao, whose masterpieces include the Omotesando Hills and the Tokyo Skytree, the contemporary façade of the Museum of Art in Hyogo is striking. Opened in 2002, it offers visitors a wide gamut of artworks such as paintings, prints and sculptures by both foreign and Japanese artists.

Admire the great artworks by Hyogo artists and see the interesting permanent collection of contemporary art. Look out for memorial rooms dedicated to two famous artists from Japan, Ryōhei Koiso and Kanayama Heizō and appreciate their fine works. If you are lucky, you might be able to catch a live performance at the event space and do not leave without getting a souvenir at the museum shop.
