Hyehwamun Gate (Honghwamun)

A gateway back to the ancient times.

Situated in the northeast of Hanyang, otherwise known as Seoul, sits the significant Hyehwamun Gate. Built in 1396 and originally known as Honghwamun, this imperial gate is one of four small gates within the city’s fortress walls holding great importance, as it was also the gate for people moving towards the north of the country back in the olden times.

Its vibrant red and green structure is the result of its restoration in 1992, after being destroyed to make way for a street car line. It now sits atop a stone archway surrounded by lush canopies of trees, providing a serene atmosphere for those wanting to enjoy a tour around its grounds. The gate continues to capture many with its intricate structure along with vibrant artwork painted around it, adding touches of colour to its majestic structure - a historic icon bursting with culture and one not to be missed.
