Being one of the most significant convict sites globally, especially with regards to the system of convict transportation, Hyde Park Barracks has made it onto the World Heritage List. It was designed by architect Francis Gateway and housed thousands of male convicts from 1819 to 1848. Thereafter, it was utilized as an immigration depot and an asylum for women, before it was transformed to the museum we see today.
