This is the largest museum in Hungary, in an iconic building that is clearly reminiscent of Neoclassical architecture, with its beautiful tympanum, decorated with intricate sculptures. The museum hosts a collection that tells the tale of the country, and features artefacts of great archeological value to Hungary’s narrative. It was founded in the early 19th century by Count Ferenc Széchényi, who donated his personal collection to the museum. This included prints, maps, manuscripts and coins!

You can discover prehistoric archaeology to the Acar period, and then on until modern times. This includes the age of Arpads, royal Hungary and the Rákóczi War of Independence. The rise and fall of Hungary’s communist system is also explored here, along with a stunning display of the medieval Hungarian Coronation Mantle. One of the internationally acclaimed pieces in the collection is the Monomachus Crown from the 11th century, made up of Byzantine enamel plaques showing Constantine IX Monomachus and Empress Zoe. For those of you who like all things that glitter and shine, Celtic gold and silver jewelry are just a part of archaeological collections here. Your trip to the Hungarian National Museum will leave you with a deeper knowledge of and appreciation for the country’s history.
