Budapest, Hungary
Hungarian Jewish Museum & Archives

Learn the history of the Jewish people.

The Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives has one of the most extensive Jewish community collections in all of Central and Eastern Europe, and has survived Nazi rule over Hungary. Found at the center of Budapest, which is the Historical Jewish Quarter, the museum contains objects that were significant in everyday life, as well as for religious purposes. This includes a Jewish headstone from Roman Pannonia from the 3rd century, liturgical silver items, and valuable manuscripts. The priceless artefacts were largely conserved thanks to the efforts of two employees of the museum who hid the items in the cellar during Nazi rule.

There’s much to see here, including memory books of remaining communities, lists of Holocaust victims and even postcards of the synagogues. You can even find an unusual pair of copper Dimon from 1602, with iconic Ottoman-Turkish coppersmith work. For you history buffs, this museum will prove to be eye-opening, and you will definitely walk away with a greater understanding of the Jewish way of life, and their tumultuous history.
