Humayun’s Tomb

The impressive resting place of certain Mughal royalty.

Commissioned by his loving wife Bega Begum, the tomb of Mughal Emperor Humayun rests in Delhi. Built in the later part of the 16th century, not only was this the first garden tomb in the country, but also the first monument to use such a large quantity of red sandstone to create it.

Interestingly, the design of the tomb kick started Mughal architecture in India, influencing others to build tombs as grand and massive as his. Although it has been labelled Humayun’s Tomb, it serves as the final resting place of other Mughals, such as Bega Begum herself, and Dara Shikoh, son of Emperor Shah Jahan. See this grand monument with your own eyes and you will understand why it has been bestowed the honour of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
