La Paz, Bolivia
Huayna Potosí

Calling all adventurers!

Head north of La Paz, and you will come across the beguiling snowy peak of Huayna Potosí (known in Aymara as "Thunderous Youth"). Being so close to the city, it is no surprise that this mountain is a favorite amongst locals and tourists. With two ascents from either side of the mountain, those who conquer the mountain and reach the peak are sure to feel an incredible sense of accomplishment. The first successful climb of the mountain was made in 1919 by a pair of Germans, and since then, their route is known as the "normal route".

Make your hike up to the high camp on the snow line, and settle in the camp, or pitch your own sturdy yurts or camps to protect yourself from the elements. Your goal is conquering the peak of this 20 000 feet mountain, and your reward is the absolutely stunning view from the summit. If you have the chance to view the sunset from here, the breathtaking hues of color will slowly dawn over the surrounding mountains and sights: Lake Titicaca and the peaks of Illimani and Illampu. Check your hiking gear, tighten your backpack straps and set off on your journey to Huayna Potosi!

Tips Before You Go
Do note that while the hike is often considered “easy”, it can be extremely difficult to acclimatize to the air and traverse the ice to reach the summit. If you are a novice climber, proceed with caution and try and book a guided hike with a reliable group.
