House of Photography

A large collection of pictures from renowned photographers in Marrakech.

The House of Photography, otherwise known as La Maison de la Photographie, is a private photography museum situated in the heart of the old medina of Marrakesh. Built rather recently in 2009 by Hamid Mergani and Patrick Manach, the aim of the museum is to allow visitors to have a glimpse of Morocco’s history and to educate them about the Moroccan culture.

The museum contains a large collection of pictures and documents gathered during the period 1870 to 1960 mostly by visitors and some very famous photographers. While much of the collection depicts the lifestyle of locals, their culture and their traditions, the musuem does have some rather peculiar images as well. These include images of archaeological sites and of the beautiful Moroccan landscape. Over the years, the institution has successfully attained more than 10,000 photos, postcards, journals, negatives, maps and prints, all available for your viewing pleasure. Indeed, the House of Photography is truly a place that will transport you back to Morocco’s past through its captivating images!
