The most iconic building on Marken is its lighthouse, the Paard van Marken. Its cylindrical lighthouse, with two pyramidal-roofed houses behind, give the structure its distinctive horse-like silhouette, giving it the name “Horse of Marken”. Reaching up to the sky at the easternmost tip of the peninsula, the charming lighthouse provides beautiful views over the Ijsselmeer, and looks as if it is situated at the end of the world.

As the Paard van Marken is now privately owned, visitors are not allowed to enter and tour the lighthouse. However, it is open to public on Open Monument Day, which is held in mid-September every year.
