Honolulu Fish Auction at Pier 38

Tuna… Tuna everywhere!

Your stomach is rumbling, and your mouth is watering as you imagine your next meal, complete with a large serving of fish. Especially tuna. Did we say tuna? Here at the Honolulu Fish Auction, “tuna” might be all that you say. Found at the end of Pier 38, it is the only fish auction in all of United States that sells fresh tuna!

The fish(y) business starts at extraordinary hours in the morning, as early as 1 a.m., when fishing vessels pull into the port and unload their catch at the auction. What you see spread out on the auction floor before you is millions of dollars of fresh catch. The frenzy is impressive to watch, with an unrelenting group of bidders who want the freshest and the best fish served at the likes of national restaurants and markets. The fish found here include the Opah, otherwise known as the moon fish for its circular body. The big eye tuna is another impressive sight, alongside the brightly-coloured mahimahi, or “dorado”. You definitely can’t miss out this chance, even if you must resign yourself to just watching the mouthwatering display from afar.
