A touching monument remembering history’s persecuted homosexuals.
Beside the Keizersgracht Canal lies Amsterdam’s Homomonument, a monument made of three pink interconnected triangles dedicated to homosexuals who had been persecuted in the past. Its design is based on the pink triangle Nazis used to identify homosexuals in concentration camps, who would then be treated much worse than other prisoners.
The three triangles each point to an important monument in Amsterdam. One points to the National War Memorial on Dam Square, another to the headquarters of COC Amsterdam, a gay rights organisation, and the last to Anne Frank’s house. Commissioned in 1980, it is the first monument in history dedicated to homosexuals, solidifying Amsterdam’s support for the LGBT movement and marking a huge step in the progression of LGBT rights.
