Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi

An ancient monastery still home to over 120 monks today!

The Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi situated on Mount Athos in Greece was established during the second half the 10th century by three monks - Athanasius, Atonius and Nicholas all of whom were disciples of Athanasius the Athonite. Since then, there have been other buildings built, most of them during the Byzantine era and the 18th and 19th centuries where the monastery reached its highest peak.

Till today, over 120 monks live in the compound and larger refurbishment and expansion works are in the way. Two large Sketes, or monastic style communities, are actually attached to Vatopedi - the Skete of Saint Demetrius and the Skete of Saint Andrew. The compound is comprised of several buildings, including the main church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the trapeza, a clock tower and the 10th century tower that now houses a library. The Girdle of the Blessed Virgin Mary made out of camel hair is located here, where it is considered a prized possession. Many have mentioned the blessings received as a result of the girdle.
