Hokokuji Bamboo Forest (報国寺)

The forest which reminds one of a Japanese water colour painting.

Nestled in the verdant hills of Kamakura lies the Hokokuji Temple, which belongs to the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. Founded in the early years of the Muromachi Period, this temple was rebuilt in the 1920s after the Great Kanto Earthquake. Also known as the ‘Bamboo Temple’, the Hokokuji Temple is best known for its enchanting bamboo forest.

Located behind the main hall of the temple, walking into the bamboo grove is akin to stepping into a different realm. With more than 2000 bamboo stalks in various shades of green towering above you, the atmosphere is so calm that it will melt all your stress away. Follow the narrow pathway which leads to a charming teahouse where you can enjoy a refreshing cup of green tea and soak in the best vibes that Mother Nature provides.
