Overlooking the vast green pastures and pristine deep blue lakes of the Appenzell Alps, as well as the deep, rocky crevices of the gorgeous Rhine Valley, the Hoher Kasten provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape of as many as 6 different countries. A nostalgic cable car ride takes visitors from Brülisau valley station to the summit of Hoher Kasten – 1,794-metres above the Rhine valley.


At the expansive panoramic viewing terraces, visitors are treated to informative panorama boards and free telescopes with integrated peak identification, which provides visitors with fascinating insight into the surrounding natural landscape. Alternatively, visitors can pamper themselves by enjoying delicious cuisine at the newly built revolving restaurant, complete with sun terrace, all whilst luxuriating in the gorgeous alpine views from a 360-degrees. Families, especially those with kids, can take a leisurely stroll through the summit’s lovely gardens and discover more than 300 species of indigenous plants from the local alpine region, whilst hiking enthusiasts can embark on an exciting geological hiking trail above the Stauberengrat to learn about the intriguing folds and fractures of the region’s rocky terrain.

Tips Before You Go
Visitors are advised that the geological trail leading from Hoher Kasten to Fählensee lake via Saxerlücke is expected to take 3 to 4 hours for a round trip. More information on available hiking trails can be found on the official website.
The Hoher Kasten is closed during the winter season, generally from the period of January to March.
Aside from taking the cable car ride up to the summit of Hoher Kasten, visitors can also opt to hike the ascent to the peak via a 2 to 3 hours trail.
